photography::camera soul
Hey there! Already loving the community and I can't wait to see the submissions for the contest.

Some stuff about me. I graduated from university in 2007; I was a film major so I've got some experience. I guess I've always liked taking pictures but it wasn't until I went to Rome for spring break two years ago that I realized how fun it is not to just point and click but to really set up shots and make them look nice. And it wasn't until recently that I got a new computer and found a shiny photo editor. It's just what came with the computer but it's got controls for contrast, brightness, saturation, tint and so on. I've been going kinda nuts with it and I put some before and after shots in my journal here.

I use a simple little HP digital camera (it's nothing special but I like it and it came with a printer). I didn't have my own digital camera when I went to Rome so I borrowed a friend's so I have no clue what that is.

On to the pictures.Collapse )

Exercise - running

I really like taking pictures of people, but I've never really been sure what exactly makes a perfect person shot. I've taken some photos of my boyf and I would really love some concrit on them. I think I've captured quite a lot of personality but I can't quite work out if this is because they're my photos and I remember him fooling around posing for me or if the actual pictures bring it across. Also, they're completely unedited and I would love any advice on whether you think they need any and exactly what if you think they do - I'm more than a bit of a n00b with all that stuff!

So... yay! Photos behind the cut!

People photos! Or really, just one person XD.Collapse )

I'm excited to take part in this community and hopefully learn as well. I'm pretty new to photography and I don't know very much beyond point and click at whatever I find interesting. I recently got a new camera so I wanted to try taking photography more seriously, so any criticism on any aspect is welcome and appreciated. I use a Canon EOS Rebel XTi, and I have Photoshop Elements though I haven't tried editing any of my pictures with it yet. I don't know how to use all the features yet on my camera, so any tips or advice on that is welcome as well. :) So here are a few pictures I took recently while experimenting with my camera:

only dream I ever have
You don't know how much I love you for starting this community. I suck when it comes to posting photos of anything non-fandom related, even on my Flickr, but I'm hoping this comm will change all that... looking forward to the challenges too. :)

I use the Pentax K10D DSLR with the standard 50mm lense it came with and (because it was in the sale) a Tamron 70-300mm/Macro lense. I've only been using it since August and I'm having major problems getting used to it. Before that I used the Fuji FinePix S602z and over the 4 years I had it it did me proud... although I've noticed a huge difference now I have 10 megapixels to play with instead of 6. I eventually want to add more lenses to my kit but, with the expense of it so far, it's going to have to wait a while.

I've just upgraded my editing software, the joys of Windows Vista! So I'm currently using both Photoshop CS3 and PaintShopPro X2. I heavily relied on editing software with my old camera but since investing in the Pentax I only tend to play with the contrast a little... oh, and sometimes the color as I still haven't gotten used to the white balance settings.

This was taken with my Fuji and edited in PSP. It was taken at the Thistle Hotel, Heathrow Airport, London. Strange how pretty a half dead plant can look on top of the entrance to a hotel reception, huh. I seriously upped the colour saturation but sadly I can't seem find the original file so you can see the difference.

A few other favs, before and afterCollapse )

I've taken a ton of photos over Christmas with the new Pentax and now I have a shiny new PC to view them on I'll be sure to post some more soon. Concrit is more than welcome, in fact I'd be grateful to know what you guys think. Also feel free to friend me on Flickr as I plan on using that baby a lot more this year.

Sherlock - no access

I think my strength lies in finding photo-worthy shots that others might not see. (I think the bridge and vine is a good example). I like playing with views outside of the normal standing eye level. I get up on chairs, crouch down, and hang over the railings to get a shot that's just a little bit different from the norm. I'm using a Canon PowerShot SD110. 35mm film just became too expensive, but unfortunately I never properly learned how to fiddle with all the functions. I'm still playing with what's available on the digital.

Hello! Welcome! I'm really chuffed to see so many people joined up already! XD

I'd like to encourage you to get posting and sharing your photos, so we can get a feel for how this is going to work and what levels we're all working at. If you're looking for a way to get started with posting, you can do any (or all) of the following in an introduction post:

  • Post a couple of photos you're pleased with and say why you like them.
  • Post a couple of photos you're not pleased with and say what you found difficult about taking them.
  • Tell us what camera and/or equipment you use, including any graphics programs. Are you confident with what you've got and how to use it?
  • Tell us what areas you feel confident or comfortable in, and where you'd like to improve.
  • Tell us what you'd like to get out of a community like this one.

  • The first challenge will be posted soon!
